Learning to Fly Page 3
When he ended with ‘amen’, Cassie mouthed, “Amen.” As the chaplain had prayed, little arms had stretched out from her sides, turning and dipping, as if they were wings on a pretend airplane. As he finished, she flapped them up and down like a bird. After the prayer, the chaplain stood. “We’re going to leave now and let the doctor see you. I’ll be back later.”
“Okay,” chimed Cassie in her songbird voice.
They approached the doctor standing at the open door. He smiled and praised them. “Thank you, chaplain, boys, I am truly impressed with your healing abilities.”
The chaplain tipped an imaginary hat as he passed and all three floated on air out the door.
The day Cassie left the hospital, it rained. But, Sam could see that in Cassie’s heart the sun shone brightly. He felt the same way. Owls have a reputation for being wise. Sam believed it. In a round-about way the bird had led him to believe. Had taught him that perfect love casts out all fear. Now, Sam realized how valuable his sister was to him.
They celebrated Thanksgiving together as a family united. Sam’s conscience was clear. He grinned at Cassie who sat across from him. He envisioned Cassie growing up to be a veterinarian, or a zookeeper, always a defender of God’s creatures.
Their lives stretched before them like the spread of goodies laid out on the table beneath his sister’s folded hands, and like Persimmon, who lay draped over the back of a chair by the window. As they gave thanks, Sam was sure of one thing in his own future. He would never again clip Cassie’s wings.
Forever, he would be there for his sister.
Sam would always help her to fly!
